The '1882' pattern is important in camera design. Its essential features were a back hinged to the baseboard and a front which pulled out on rails for focusing. The front was locked by rods passing through the front standard. The front could be pushed into the back and the baseboard raised and locked to the back. This form was widely copied, it also, through a series of modifications, developed into the British form of folding 'Hand and Stand' camera.

Introduced in June 1882. Available in either horizontal landscape format or square with a reversing back. Brass binding was an extra. Later the reversing back was always fitted.

The quarter-plate size is not advertised.

The Morgan & Kidd roll-holder was produced in sizes from quarter-plate to 15" x 12" for darkroom-loaded paper negatives. It was an early example of a roll-holder and featured an automatic stop to the film advance. Morgan & Kidd did much to popularise paper negatives.
