The Original Sanderson field camera appeared in 1895 and introduced the Universal Swing Front. This was the arrangement where the front standard was held by a pair of struts each side of the lens panel. A compound front was added later that year allowing the lens to be moved in any direction.

The A pattern was introduce in 1896 and had a different method of closing the camera compared to the Original model and a strut was added to support the rear standard. By 1897 the front standard was held by a brass strut and a wooden strut each side of the standard. The tallbody feature was added in 1901 and around 1902 side swing to the back was added.
