Image of Mayfield, Cobb

Shutter:
Sector type, spring powered, single speed.

Construction:
Ebonite body, leather square-cornered mauve bellows.

Format:
3 " x 3 " plates held in double dark-slides.

Focusing:
Bellows. Single extension.

Attributes:
Tripod socket.

With:
3 wooden double dark-slides.

The Mayfield, Cobb was one of the first cameras to be made of a plastic-like substance such as ebonite. The material does not seem to be very successful as the brass binding looks to have been added to strengthen the body.

In 1889 Mayfield, Cobb was advertising as plate manufacturers.

Further Information:
This example was in the Baron collection and sold at the Christie's sale 11/12/2002, prior to this it was sold at Christie's sale 13/1/1994 lot 216. A very similar camera was sold in the Purmutt sale (Christie's 10/11/1984 lot 107) although it was there described as made of wood and brass. A complete camera is in the National Media Museum collection.
