Image of New Patent Camera

Construction:
Mahogany, dovetail joints, brass fittings. Leather bellows with diagonal cut corners.

Format:
6 ½" x 4 ¾" plates held in double dark-slides.

Focusing:
Bellows. Double extension. Rear standard moved by rack and pinion (straight cut).

Attributes:
Reversing back. Removable lens panel. Fitting for a septum.

Movements:
Rising front, cross front. Tilting back.

Notes:
Address: 179 Aston Rd.

The interesting point about the New Patent is the way it folds, the bellows disengage form the front standard and push to the back, the rear standard folds down onto the baseboard and the front standard folds down on top of the rear standard, the front is hinged a little way above the baseboard to give clearance to the folded rear standard. The camera is one of the first where the corners of the bellow are cut diagonally. The reversing frame unclips from the rear standard when a button is depressed. The focusing screen moves on parallel links similar to those used on Lancaster cameras and patented the previous year.

Ashford (f. 1883) were best known for making tripods, the New Patent was not greatly advertised and could not have sold in large numbers. It was probably the basis for a Ross stereo camera sold around 1890. The wood used is exceptionally thin and would not have stood up to heavy use. The lacquer on the brass fittings is a distinctive gold.
