The Pupille was a small precision camera for roll-film. The design was probably influenced by the 35 mm cameras, such as the Leica, that were appearing around this time.

The camera front is drawn out by a lever operating the helical thread on the lens tube which locks into place, the large focusing ring then operates. When retracted the shutter release is locked to prevent exposure.

A lever on the bottom of the camera frees the top plate which is removed to load the film, the spool chambers are attached to the top plate.

A fitting on top of the camera allows a range-finder, made by Leitz, to be fitted. A reflex attachment was also available that turned the camera into a twin-lens reflex.

Lenses available included: f3.5 Elmar, f2 Xenon, f3.5 Tessar, f2.8 Tessar, f2.9 Xenar and f3.5 Xenar. The price with an Elmar was £15.15.0. In Britain the camera was sold as the Rolloroy by R. F. Hunter.

The Ranca was a simpler model with pull-out lens tube and front-cell focusing.

From 1932 Nagel became part of Eastman Kodak who continued to sell the Pupille for a short while. Kodak catalogues list a brilliant finder as being available as well as close-up lenses and filters. Different styles of case exist. An example finished in gold was sold at auction.
