Image of Autotank

For 5" x 4" plates. Nickel plated.

This consists of an enclosed developing dish with a light-trapped inlet and outlet for the chemicals. Probably introduced in 1914 and announced in the BJA of that year under the name of Daylight Developing Autochrome Box. It was intended for the development and reversal of single Autochrome plates when away from a darkroom, the plate was loaded into the tank using a changing bag. It was particularly useful for travellers who wanted to check the exposure of a plate. Advertised in sizes of quarter-plate, 5" x 4" and half-plate. Production was probably stopped during the war.

Image of Time Tank

For 3 ¼" x 4 ¼" plates. Nickel plated. Box.

The Time Tank was introduced in 1909, around 1911 the tank had an improved lid arrangement and was nickel plated rather than 'bronzed zinc'. This model was manufactured in the Watkins factory, previously they were made elsewhere. The Time Tank held plates horizontally so less developer would be used when only a few plates were developed. It was made in a range of sizes from 3 ¼" x 3 ¼" to half-plate, and later from 4 x 6.5 cm to whole-plate. A stereo 45 x 107 mm was also produced. Lids could be purchased separately so that different sizes of plate could be developed in a single base. Watkins was a promoter of 'Time' development over the inspection method.
