The Time Tank was introduced in 1909, around 1911 the tank had an improved lid arrangement and was nickel plated rather than 'bronzed zinc'. This model was manufactured in the Watkins factory, previously they were made elsewhere. The Time Tank held plates horizontally so less developer would be used when only a few plates were developed. It was made in a range of sizes from 3 ¼" x 3 ¼" to half-plate, and later from 4 x 6.5 cm to whole-plate. A stereo 45 x 107 mm was also produced. Lids could be purchased separately so that different sizes of plate could be developed in a single base. Watkins was a promoter of 'Time' development over the inspection method.

David Allan produced a number of similar tanks for plates, cut-films and film packs. This example is the standard Dallan tank for plates or, with different inserts, cut-films and film packs. Early models were without the pouring spout. In the late 1930s the tanks were optionally made of stainless steel. Similar tanks were advertised by Allan into the 1950s. Produced in sizes from 4.5 x 6 cm to 6 ½" x 8 ½".

David Allan were sheet metal workers who specialised in darkroom products. Established in 1868.

The hanging chain allowed the tank to be suspended beneath a tap to wash the plates.
