The No. 4 was the first of the Cartridge series of cameras. The first version of the No. 4 had a wooden front standard and brass fittings. The price was £5.5.0.

The Cartridge range used daylight-loading Cartridge film (paper-backed roll-film) that had been introduced in 1895 for smaller size hand and box cameras. They replaced an earlier darkroom-loaded range of medium format cameras. Three models were produced:

  • No. 3, 4 ¼" x 3 ¼". Introduced 1900.
  • No. 4, 5" x 4". Introduced 1897.
  • No. 5, 7" x 5". Introduced 1898.
They were aimed at the serious amateur photographer and incorporated good lenses and shutters. A plate back adapter was available for each model. A portrait image format was adopted.
