Lever Slide - 'Taking a Dip'

Image of Masking Lever Slide

Masking Lever Slide
. Carpenter & Westley, London. Woman holding an umbrella. 8 ⅜" x 4" mahogany mount. The umbrella is in two alternative positions.

Moving the lever pivots a mask which hides/reveals one part of the image.

In this slide two alternative aspects of a subject are painted on a single glass plate the lever controls a mask which hides or reveals one aspect.
Image of Slipping Slide

Slipping Slide
. Policeman smoking a cigarette then hanging in a tree after being frightened by a dog. 7" x 4" mahogany mount.

This consists of a fixed plate and another that can slip over the first. The fixed plate is painted with two alternative positions of the main subject. The moving slide is painted with masks that block out either of the two alternative parts of the subject.

Image of Slipping Slide

Slipping Slide
. Man with moving moustache playing a musical instrument. 7" x 4" mahogany mount.

This consists of a fixed plate and another that can slip over the first. The fixed plate is painted with the main subject. The moving slide is painted with two alternative parts of the subject (the moustache in this example). Moving the slide superimposes either of the images on to the main image.

These slides usually show a before and after effect or end phases of a repetitive movement. The slipping part of the slide is operated quickly to form the illusion. The transformation in these slides is brought about in two ways:
  • The fixed glass carries both of the alternative images, the slipping slide is painted with masks that block out either image. The first example above is of this type.
  • A main subject is painted on the fixed glass and two alternative parts of the subject on the slide (e.g. a man's body on the fixed glass, two heads with different expressions on the slide). The second example above is of this type.
Often both types would be incorporated in the one slide.

More elaborate mechanical slides may combine different types of mechanism in one slide.
