Image of Two Guinea

Lens:
f9, 4 ½" achromat. Two aperture settings, a pivoting plate holds the smaller aperture.

Shutter:
Single-blade return (rebound type), I, B settings, elastic band powered. The finger release gives an instantaneous speed, the pneumatic release gives a bulb setting. The arm of the pneumatic release has to be attached to the shutter blade before use and disengaged after use, the shutter blade is open as long as the bulb of the release is pressed.

Construction:
Leather covered wood body, metal slides.

Format:
12, 3 ¼" x 4 ¼" plates held in double dark-slides.

Focusing:
Fixed.

Attributes:
Two reflecting view-finders.

With:
Three double dark-slides.

The Two Guinea model was very similar to the slightly earlier Guinea, the lens and shutter arrangement were the same as were the plate holders. The Guinea had a body made of fibreboard, the top of the camera hinged up to give access to the plate holders. The Two Guinea had a wood body covered in leather, a tripod socket was included as was a pneumatic release which was optional on the cheaper model. Advertisements emphasised that when not in use the camera could not be recognised for what it was.

There are feet at the bottom of the camera when in landscape mode, in this position the shutter would operate vertically, which is correct for a 'rebound' type, there is, though, a second finder for portrait mode, in this position the shutter blade would move horizontally it is not clear how this would work unless the pneumatic release were used.

The dark slides are very unusual, they consist of a metal frame open front and back and also at the top, and a separate inner frame that holds the plates and forms the top of the dark slide. Being made of metal they are heavier than conventional wood slides.
