Lens:
f6.3, 7 ⅞" Zeiss Patent Anastigmat Series VIIa No. 10, iris diaphragm to f45. Combinable lens f12.5, 13 ¾" (marked on the scale 14"), back group iris to f45. Serial no. 20308 20307 .

Shutter:
N&G, sector type, spring powered with pneumatic regulation, speeds 1/2 - 1/100. T setting by short pressure on release with shutter set to 1/2 second.

Construction:
Mahogany body covered in tan pigskin.

Format:
12, 6 ½" x 4 ¾" plates held in removable changing box, bag type.

Focusing:
Bellows scale to 2 yards with combined lens, 4 yards with rear group. Double extension.

Attributes:
Two reflecting view-finders. Automatic counter on changing box. 'T' spirit level.

Movements:
Rise and cross front.

Serial Number:
SH537 .

Notes:
Address on plaque: Newman & Guardia Ltd. 17 & 18 Rathbone Place. London. W. (1909 - 1929).

With:

  • Changing box for 12 plates, with plate holders and pressure slide. 1886 and 1892 patents. Serial no. 1407.
  • 'Instructions for using the N & G Universal Camera'. 4th ed. The inside cover is stamped with the new Rathbone Place address.

This camera is finished in pigskin and would have been produced to special order, a similar Special B pigskin model is shown in Holmes, Age of Cameras. The serial number points a date of 1897, the name plaque has the later Rathbone Place address which would have been added when the camera was sold second-hand or repaired.
