This is a disc type calculator incorporated into a diary that also contains a note book, exposure records and tables of information. The diary, with exposure tables, first appeared in 1900, the calculator was introduced in 1903. Various names were used:

  • Wellcome's Photographic Diary and Exposure Record. 1900
  • Wellcome's Photographic Exposure Record and Diary. 1901 - 1909
  • Wellcome Photographic Exposure Record and Diary. Until c. 1921
  • Wellcome Photographic Exposure Calculator, Handbook and Diary. c. 1922 - c. 1941
  • Wellcome Photographic Exposure Guide. c. 1942 - 1946
  • Wellcome Photographic Year Book. 1947 - 1948
Until 1903 the diary was in the form of a book, from 1903 the familiar wallet style was introduced, early editions were also available bound in leather, usually red. The wallet style, having end flaps that closed up around the book, remained until c. 1941. Due to paper shortages a war time issue was produced, this was a slim book without the diary and much other information. The book form continued in expanded form after the war. From 1947 the calculator was included in the 'Wellcome Photographic Year Book', in 1949 this became the 'Johnson Wellcome Photographic Year Book' when Johnsons became the agents for Wellcome products. Different editions for different parts of the world were produced (Northern hemisphere, Southern hemisphere, intr. 1901, USA, intr. 1907), these usually had covers of different colours, red being for the USA, blue for the southern hemisphere.
