Meter Type:
Comparison.

Calibration:
Scaled: 0 - 2.0 Foot-Candles.

Construction:
Mahogany.

The Holophane Lumeter was a comparison photometer where the illumination is measured against an electric bulb.

The bulb is housed within a circular chamber in the body of the meter, turning the dial on the side of the box opens and closes a baffle in front of an opal screen. A telescope runs within the top of the box. In the line of sight is a second opal screen set at an angle that reflects light from the bulb/screen. The second opal screen has a small clear spot to observe the subject. The instrument is adjusted until the direct and reflected light are matched. Two neutral density filters can be positioned in the direct light path, these reduce the illumination by 1/10 and 1/100. A button on the side of the box activates the bulb. The bulb can be moved relative to the opal screen for calibration purposes.
