Adams produced a number of removable changing boxes and mechanisms within detective cameras. The naming and designation used by Adams is not always clear, particularly for the pre 1902 period.

Early

This model was based on the Newman patent of 1886 and was probably made by Newman. It was a bag type with a button on the top of the box to lift the front plate, this seems to have been quickly replaced by a one using a lever to raise the rear plate. Around 1892 Adams produced their own box looking very similar to the earlier Newman model using a lever to lift the plate.

Popular

Introduced c. 1894, these have a lifter at the front of the box and a draw-slide. It was made in two forms one in walnut for 12 plates the other in mahogany for plates or films.

Yale

Based on Adams' 1896 patent and fitted to the Yale detective camera. The front plates rest on an incline that lifts the plates which can then be gripped by the fingers.

Tilting Frame

Based on Adams' 1892 patent, part of the box tilts backwards and so gives access to the front plate that can be lifted. This is also referred to as a Yale pattern.

1902 model

Based on Adams' 1901 patent, the box is fitted with a tambour shutter to expose the plate and a lifter at the side of the box to lift the front plate.

C Pattern

The 1902 model was renamed C around 1905, it was selectable for 12 plates or 24 cut-films.

B Pattern

Similar to the model C but for 8 plates or, in a different form, 16 films.

A Pattern

This was a version of the Popular.

Automatic

A push-pull model was briefly advertised in 1904 but probably not produced.

Ernemann

For a time a push-pull box made by Ernemann was advertised.
